The future is so bright we are all going to have to wear shades. That is probably going to be necessary because of radiation rather than sunshine but, if you like your sunshine in a sixties style, then you won’t go far wrong with a listen to “The Flip Side” by Monogroove.

Monogroove have been around for a while and they do a nicely consistent line in reviving the psychedelic jingle jangle sound of the lates sixties and early seventies and making it work in today’s musical environment. Being retro is, of course, almost trendy these days so Monogroove are on the right track and their distinctly commercial song writing skills keeps them safely and securely on the way to their power pop destination. Nothing wrong with that, of course, and this album will likely make you think you have been transferred by magic to California with “I Think of You” and “I Don’t Wanna Say”, in particular, sounding like they could only have come out of some metaphorical eight track player.

So, “The Flip Side” is full of straightforward pop songs in the sixties vain from an eminently likeable band. That works for me. Indeed, if you could see me now, you would see that I am smiling for, once again, Monogroove have taken it to the proverbial bridge.
