BluesBunny wonders what is in the water in Texas these days. So much quality music is emanating from the Lone Star state. Ginger Leigh's album "Sugar in My Coffee" is no exception. We are talking about intelligent music for adults here. Miles away from fluffy bunny land. This is gritty stuff.
Let us consider some of the songs. "Holy World" impresses us with its commentary on the hypocrisy of modern society. The half-spoken intro to the album's title track "Sugar in My Coffee" is hypnotic leading us into a solid piece of rock. "Mexican Man" is a forthright tale of sexual (mis)adventure. Sort of like Carly Simon without the relationship issues, this song hits hard and reminds us why we should always listen to the lyrics. "Angel" puts us in mind of Tex-Mex legend Joe "King" Carrasco at his most manic with some powerhouse playing by Stewart Cochran driving the song along. Suffice it to say that we were strutting about the room singing along to this one. "In Your Company" is a fine ballad but beware - there is no sugar coating on this one.
Classy music with a conscience. Honest, direct and confrontational lyrics. And you can hum the tunes. You can't ask for more than that.
