I don’t know quite I was expecting from “Swinging Electric Roots” by Bluestronica as this album is less a musical endeavour than a rather diverting mix of what might rightly be called traditional blues music combined with modern synthetic production techniques.

I would not have supposed that the blues would ever have needed any sort of sonic update yet with some near merciless looping, it becomes possible to imagine even Boo Boo Davis making a second career as a dancefloor filler and, to some extent, this modernisation through combination with more commercial musical styles approach could be seen as being artistically valid. Certainly, the hypnotic effect of the traditional twelve bar blues format has never been in doubt and the addition of rigid rhythmical constructs does nothing other than enhance the evidence to support that simple fact.

Whether the die hard blues fan will take to the Bluestronica style is a matter for debate but it would be entirely possible that a modern audience will, through recognition of sounds that they recognise, find their feet moving to a groove that predates their very existence. Anyway, with that said, any album with Boo Boo Davis on it gets my vote.
