Everybody can have the blues. That’s how the story goes and it is therefore reasonable to assume that Geiger von Mueller can have the blues even if they are, as the title of his album suggests, “Neocubist Blues”.
This is something of an oddity as far as albums go as, while thematically consistent, most songs are on this album are so short that they seem more temporary meditations on the songs that might follow than an actual attempt at completion. Of the songs that are of a length to make the classification of being songs, it is fair to say that they take the instrumental format and subject it to a degree of deconstruction that verges on the decorative. I will, however, give credit to Geiger von Mueller for taking such an individualistic approach and, perhaps surprisingly, this full song and song fragments approach, whilst an unusual one outside of the world of the avant-garde, provides adequate evidence that the obscured conventionality he pairs with his obvious virtuosity on the guitar can be quite effective if you pay attention.
So, if you think that your ears have become jaded but you still don’t want to go too far from the mainstream, “Neocubist Blues” might prove to be invigorating.
