Ah, the joy of familiarity. Not many bands have the requisite skills to sound like more bands than the average person can remember and, doing so energetically, is exactly how Drakulas roll with their album “Midnight City”.

Drakulas - Zach Blair, Mike Wiebe and Sam Weir - have got that indie guitar sound well and truly mastered and they always walk the commercial side of the street with more than enough retro in their pocket to keep the old folks happy who remember it all from back in the days when beer wasn’t a luxury product. There is, of course, some choice language in their lyrics but this is, after all, a reflection of the sounds of the street yet that modern day lyrical conventionality clearly has been put together with a dash of almost pop punk joy and – dare I say it – Britpop style literacy.

Even if your musical tastes don’t stretch to continuous guitars on the rampage, Drakulas provide more than enough proof that they are purveyors of songs that might cause your average Joe to join in on the chorus. That not a bad result. Not bad at all.
