There I was questioning the meaning of life (and, more importantly, the price of beer) when what is left of my once logical mind got to, once again, pondering the possible location of protest songs in our scandalously unexciting here and now. I was going to consult the legendary Sherlock Holmes on the matter when the not quite so legendary Dystopian Futures dropped their latest EP “Sync Sessions Vol 1” into my lap. Not literally, of course, as this is a digital only release but impact is impact and my lap is ground zero.
Being from Scotland, Dystopian Futures most likely have little to smile about so these four songs were never going to be the audio equivalent of candy floss. Post punk angularity is much in evidence with twisted guitars and the unmistakeable sound of overdriven everything duly making this as much a sonic wall as a possible fireproof carrier of social commentary for, amongst this band’s ear melting intent, there are indeed many words and those words have worth, if not actual wrath.
“Sync Sessions Vol 1” seems, at times, almost at the abyss of angry with that square peg in a round hole mentality, when combined with those sharp edges and some near psychedelic excesses, pleasingly stamping the songs of Dystopian Futures with a degree of individuality that is increasingly unusual in these conformist times.
Available from Bandcamp and the usual digital places.
