I can’t remember the last time I ever went to a shopping mall nor, indeed, can I actually remember the songs that would have made the soundtrack to a weekend visit to such a place. I can’t but Alicia Sky can and she has put all her favourite covers from that time and place into one box called “Covers”.
Sometimes you have more fun identifying the songs than listening to them. That was certainly the case for me but that comment does perhaps do Alicia Sky something of a disservice. She clearly has an affinity for these songs and her presentation of them cleverly emphasises the homogeneity inherent to this kind of music with the looped beat of the corporate computer nicely counterpointed by her full on vocal style.
I don’t suppose that an album like this was ever meant to be targeted at my ears yet there was something quite endearing about listening to songs being sung by a singer who could put them into perspective. Anyway, she had me singing along to her version of the Backstreet Boy’s hit “I Want It That Way” and I didn’t think such a thing would ever happen.
I think I need to drink some more beer.
