It is undeniable that Italy is a country filled to capacity with the kind of style that mere mortals like myself can only dream of so it was with great anticipation that I listened to “What’m I Getting High On?” by One Eyed Jack.
However, style didn’t seem to be a primary concern for this trio from Verolanuova with a cascade of American influences threatening to drown any individuality throughout the course of this album. Chunks of grunge and neo- psychedelia provide most of the meat in One Eyed Jack’s musical stew but, and this may be a consequence of singling in English rather than Italian, the seasoning wasn’t quite right with only “The Edge of the Soul” and “Drama Shit” capable of being passed off as gourmet treats.
Ultimately unsatisfying, “What’m I Getting High On?” lacks a sense of direction with the result being that the album never really captures your attention. One Eyed Jack are, however, proficient performers and it is to be hoped that they will take more chances with their next album.
