The blues often provides a good home to a big voice and Canadian singer Dalannah Gail Bowen certainly has a big voice. Aided and abetted by a more than capable band, she uses that voice to sing the praises and otherwise of, as might probably guess from the album title, men.

“Them Menz” is, however, a very conventional blues album that doesn’t stray far what you might expect lyrically of what Ruth Brown was doing back in the day. No Cathy Jean style self flagellating acidity here therefore but many people like it just like they always thought it should be.

There’s a neat cover of “Never Make Your Move Too Soon” that provides both the album’s highlight and proof that Dalannah Gail Bowen can stamp her own personality on a song. Credit must also be given to the motive power provided throughout this album by the deft and dapper fingers of Michael Creber on piano and Hammond organ.

If you like big voiced blues then you will find much to enjoy in “Them Menz”.

The album is available from Bandcamp.
