It's the end of March which means its spring and it is snowing. Snow and spring go together like chalk and cheese but this is Glasgow and anything goes, I suppose. Anyway, to the review…
I arrive in Box (it's the launch night for a new social networking website called itison.com) with a young man by the name of Stewart Robbie already on stage. His voice was alright but his guitar playing was better and, being mixture of plucking and strumming, it gave his songs a good sound. He finished his set off with a "Blowin' in the Wind" medley. OK but nothing spectacular.
Following him was a man by the name of Shaun - that's right, just Shaun - but, hey, maybe he loves Prince or Sting. His set was a bunch of acoustic covers which featured "Kids" by MGMT, "Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry and a personal favourite of mine "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley. His set was, in a word, rubbish. All the covers were just bad and when I heard the opening to "Redemption Song", I thought it might be better but those hopes went down like the Bismarck when he opened his mouth to sing.
Last up was a band by the name of The Modern Batushka. They were good. In fact they were great with their songs being based around blistering guitar, crashy drums and thumpy bass. The front man was confident and the band played tightly as a unit. Their skills were illustrated best on songs such as "On the Verge" and "Tulips" but my favourite track from them was their closer "Denise". The bass on it was brilliant. I'd love to hear more from them and, if you get the chance, check them out as you won't be disappointed.
